This essay explores the assumed otherness of Islam in its encounters with the immanent spectre of nihilism. Drawn from transcendence, however, Islam's 'spiritual' variants of nihilism are largely discounted in popular accounts, but also severely tested under conditions of globalizing modernity and its unchartered pathologies. A crucial distinction needs to be made between the nihilism of transcendence and the nihilism of immanence. The former sacrifices Being in favour of union with God; the latter is principally a modernist register on which neither union with God nor Being is sustainable. This distinction allows a better understanding of the phenomenon of' ‘Islamic' nihilism. (From the Lecture Abstract)
