2025 On-site Group Work Program (August 17–24, 2025)

From August 17 to 24, 2025, On-site Group Work Program was held in Belgium and the Netherlands under the theme “Addressing Sustainability Challenges through Interdisciplinary and Participatory Approaches.” The participants explored environmental issues from the perspectives of government, business, academia, and consumers, engaging in hands-on learning to uncover the essence of sustainability and practical solutions.
≫ Day 1 – Brussels, Belgium
At the EU Parliament, participants learned about the decision-making processes of the European Union. A lecture at the EU Commission provided insights into environmental policies and climate change measures. Experiencing the heart of international policy-making deepened understanding of institutional frameworks.
≫ Day 2 – Ostend and Surrounding Areas, Belgium
The group visited Daikin Europe’s headquarters and factory, observing the manufacturing process of products tailored to European needs. This highlighted the balance between technological innovation and environmental consideration. A visit to a private residence showcased a carbon-neutral lifestyle using solar panels, heat pumps, and electric vehicles, offering a glimpse into sustainability at the individual level.
≫ Day 3 – Ghent, Belgium
They toured the newly established DENV Research & Development Center at Ghent University. Under the guidance of Professor Paepe, they engaged with experts from Ghent and Ostend to discuss regional environmental challenges and solutions. Comparing urban approaches fostered a multifaceted perspective.
≫ Day 4 – Nijmegen, Netherlands
Cycling along a well-developed bike highway, they experienced environmentally conscious urban design and local lifestyles firsthand. Site visits included the redeveloped Bottenndaal district, the River Wall and Room for River project for climate resilience, and the Waalsprong urban expansion area—learning from advanced examples of sustainable city planning.
≫ Day 5 – Nijmegen, Netherlands
At Radboud University, lectures by Professor Etiënne, Assistant Professor P. Jittrapirom, and city experts provided a comprehensive understanding of the institutional, cultural, and technological barriers to implementing sustainability. Using system dynamics, they visualized causal relationships and feedback loops related to urban sustainability, gaining practical problem-solving skills.
This five-day on-site program offered a valuable opportunity to explore the core of sustainability through direct experience and dialogue. On September 3, the participants will present their final proposals in three interdisciplinary groups, combining diverse expertise across humanities, sciences, professionals, and students to collaboratively propose concrete solutions for a sustainable future.
