GRM Program Completion Report

I intended to take GRM courses for the purpose to acquire “the knowledge” and “ability be a global leader.” These goals are required to contribute to a sustainable society with the knowledge of mechanical engineering as a core point. In particular, courses such as ”GRM Theory and Method in Global Society Studies” by Prof. Hisae Nakanishi, “GRM United Nations and Global Society” by Prof. Ryuichi Ida, “GRM Introductory Global Studies” by Prof. Eiji Oyamada and “GRM Lecture on Co-Existence,” are quite educational to acquire the knowledge related to humanities and social issues systematically, which are exactly what I was hoping to learn through GRM program.
In addition, the biggest achievement I thought I got from GRM program was when I visited United Nations and the World Bank, Philippines and the Balkans. I must say I would never be able to see on my own what I could see through the field visits and see in my own eyes and feel it first hand.
I believe I have gained the ability to be a global leader by forming comprehensive point of view, patience and negotiation power to combine the strengths of all members constructively toward the goal. This brings out the expertise of each member through group work with fellow students and comrades who major in different fields. It was not easy to bundle members with different backgrounds and values. However, I think it was a very fruitful experience for my future career as a global leader to go through GRM program, especially with a theme such as harmonious co-existence of multiple cultures.
 
Mechanical Engineering is my major. I belonged to a laboratory that handles machine tools and robots, and considers collaboration and coexistence between humans and machines in the field of manufacturing. The research was conducted to reduce the vibration noise of the planetary gear mechanism used as a differential mechanism in the cooperative robot 1).
While the way of thinking and problem awareness through the study of doctoral dissertation is very important for learning in GRM, the experience at GRM  contributed to the basics  of doctoral dissertation research as well as the synergetic effect achieved more than expected results.
 
Humans use tools.  It has been developed to enrich life by innovation which can change the living environment by using tools. In particular, gears have been the foundation of human life since ancient times as a lever for powerless humans to move naturally heavy objects to support development. (The origin of the gear and its development history is not clear 2, there is also a description that a guidance car with a differential mechanism was used in China in 2600 BC 3))
Starting from the industrial revolution of the 1800's, energy consumption has increased geometrically, and the ever-expanding capitalism was coupled with the fear of exhaustion of resources such as fossil fuels.
Nowadays, the fourth industrial revolution and so on in the realm of industry progress is supposed to realize a sustainable society. The latest technologies such as the rise of artificial intelligence and IoT (Internet of Things)  is also required to improve efficiency by several percent of comma. Even the old technology such as gears is on the rise.
Generally, while the latest technology is attracting attention, gear researchers are drastically reduced4). There is an actual condition that old technology is cut off as “completed one.” Research has been continuing while forcing us to be conscious of innovation created from those combinations of balance of latest technology and old technology, in addition to balance of hardware such as machine and software which controls it. As for the issue of shrinking society, we made a presentation at the symposium on the course “GRM Lecture on Co-Existence & GRM Lecture on Resource Management.” likewise the basic idea of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, we believe that information is the key point to efficiently use materials and energy. In order to contribute to the creation of a sustainable society, we need to accurately capture the current state which is the initial condition and analyze it, set the objective function and boundary state correctly, and feel there is a need to bring about innovation. Therefore, in the GRM, I had in mind the focus on information to contribute to a sustainable society with the knowledge of mechanical engineering.
 
The first information is "knowledge". Education in recent years is becoming more fragmented. I felt it was strange that I could not see the whole of university education. During my undergraduate years, I was keen on the classes of my major and I could not afford to spend much time on other things. I went on to graduate school, I was stunned that the knowledge was not enough to realize desk theories which I had acquired through under graduate school. To contribute to society through manufacturing, I did not understand the needs of society, I was shocked that I could not find out the essence of the problem to be solved. Therefore, I decide to participate in GRM and acquire the knowledge of humanities and social systems. Thanks to the relay system lectures by Prof. Hisae Nakanishi, Prof. Ryuichi Ida, and Prof. Eiji Oyamada. I was able to acquire the knowledge that I longed to gain as I planned. In the process, some people object to actively gaining non-professional knowledge. However, in the laboratory I belonged to my major. There are nearly 60 researchers and more than 30 different themes. Having had experienced what I could reflect on my own research by broadening perspective beyond my research, I think it was indispensable to gain various knowledge through GRM.
 
Especially, I could learn the basic ideas of Global Studies and get a perspective on the current state of the world. As a result. I could learn how to obtain information from the United Nations, the World Bank, through classes and group work. That is generally referred to as OODA (Observe, Orient, Decide, Act) cycle. It became possible to analyze the current situation to a certain extent with the increase of comparable knowledge.
Beginning with the shocking "knowledge of ignorance", I was able to acquire systematic knowledge centered on mechanical engineering, by a positive chain of awareness and learning. With this systematic knowledge, not only the actual condition as an initial condition, but also I feel that I become able to accurately capture boundary conditions in developed countries and the poorest countries. However, spreading of knowledge, it is also a fact that the missing elements to myself have become clear like the following two points.
 
The second information is so-called "3現"[u1] . This is the most basic concept in manufacturing, "現場,現物,現実 (including原理and 原則, so called 5現, too)". It is a concept where its importance is ingrained in experimentation. As I made my own testing machine in my research at my major department 7), I think it was very valuable that I could actually touch 3現even in GRM as well. Thanks to GRM, I visited United Nations and the World Bank, Philippines and Balkans where I could never experience on my own. I was able to learn in the best environment. This experience was great value to pursue a career as a future global leader.
Especially, United Nations and the World Bank, where I visited on the course by Prof. Nakanishi, not only did I take a lot of lectures, but I could ask a great deal of questions. I also gained systematic knowledge about the United Nations and the World Bank which had been too far away from me. Furthermore, I was able to get along with the people who work there, and was able to think realistically as one of my career path options.
 
Also, I had basic knowledge, as mentioned above, I often notice when you see 3現, I have improved my ability to analyze through group work, etc. After these experiences, the acquired knowledge did not end with the sky theory and tied to reality. It can be said that subliming to practical and systematic knowledge was the largest achievement in GRM.
 
Finally,  about “the ability as a global leader,* in the laboratory of my major, I was surrounded by international students from China, India, France, Tunisia, Nepal, etc. However, there are more international students in GRM than my laboratory. I, am a Japanese and the student of science majors which is rare in the GRM. Not only the major fields were different, but their backgrounds and religious views were also different. Therefore, I felt the grope work at Miyako-jima difficult in the early days. My English skills has been disciplined even more. Since some classes are in English, there are some students who cannot speak English and debates to discuss with them.
 
Experiencing such circumstances are vital. Only one's own knowledge is not sufficient. I learned from experience to bring out the expertise of each member, negotiation ability and patience that constructively combine everyone's strengths towards the goal, and comprehensive point of view. I realized harmonious multicultural society, which is set as theme for GRM Program. It can be said that it is the greatest achievement in GRM to respect each other and having experiences that bring out the best of each other. As I learned by “GRM Lecture on Co-Existence & GRM Lecture on Resource Management” by Prof. Kihara, I found it important to respect other persons and to hear their opinion and not to deny them, which would be the key point for decision‐making as a grope. Nowadays, I learned the behavior which is naturally accustomed to me. However, if I had not enroll GRM program, I would not have realized how important that is and not have been sure to learn it.
 
Besides, I realize the importance of religion again. I became more respectful to the members' religious views. I deepened knowledge about religion including lecture“GRM Lecture on Co-Existence & GRM Lecture on Resource Management” by Prof. Ohara. In Japan, while living religious life, few people think it is religious. When it comes to religion, it tends to be regarded as dangerous, such as Aum Shinrikyo and ISIS. I think that there are many negative impressions. Religion is very important as a foundation of life as we are convinced through GRM. It is an element that cannot be ignored when thinking more globally and when building a sustainable society in the future. So far, science and religion have a history of confronting each other, but I believe that religion should not be ignored as a boundary condition in order to contribute to society through manufacturing in the future.
Starting from the research of doctoral dissertation and its environment, GRM activities have been conducted with the aim of acquiring "systematic knowledge" and "the basics of being a global leader" which are necessary for contributing to a sustainable society with the knowledge of mechanical engineering at its core.
In particular, while increasing knowledge by focusing on information among the elements necessary for manufacturing, connected knowledge with reality by looking at 3現with my own eyes, I have realized and achieved results through group work with international members. Through this process, cultivating knowledge as a global leader along with systematization of knowledge, I was able to get results and achievements more than I imagined as a member (human resources) to embody multicultural coexistence at the beginning. In view of the poorest countries and in a more globalizing world, accurately grasping the current conditions of each initial condition, reckoning the boundary conditions derived from each religious background, etc, I would like to build my career as a global leader who can realize multicultural coexistence and a sustainable society.
