From the 27th to the 29th of this month, I participated in the Beppu fieldwork of the GRM program. The purpose of this Beppu fieldwork was to study geothermal power generation through local activities and to deeply consider the issues surrounding it. During these three days, I visited the Hatchobaru Geothermal Power Plant in Beppu and communicated with people from different countries, which really made me learn a lot and made me progress.
During this three day field work, we worked as a group with four members and got the support from TA. We selected a country called Indonesia, and presented about the big picture of the development of geothermal power generation in this country. Also, It was an instant training, so the group work time was limited to two nights to prepare for the presentation. As a group leader, I was really stressed, but with the nice support from TA, it ended successfully.Due to lack of time, we can't investigate very carefully. However, through this group work, I know how to establish a research framework in a short time, and also understand how to exchange opinions with team members and reach an agreement from the actual participation of group work.
At last, I learned a lot about geothermal power generation in classes and literature before. However, compared with the lecture, fieldwork made me actually see and feel the advantages, disadvantages and existing problems of geothermal energy from several aspects. Regarding renewable energy and environmental issues, I would like to reconsider not only technical issues, but also how to manage energy, what is the acceptability of local residents, and how to harmonize the relationship between the environment and residents. Moreover, these problems not only need to be studied and solved separately, but also to know how to solve these problems as an intergration just in one project.
Finally, I benefited a lot from this fieldwork. Once again, I deeply felt the importance of field work and hope to have more opportunities to understand the essence of the problem on the sites.
